Behind the Hillsong phenomenon

By Jess Daly and Helen Grasswill

This time last year, Treasurer Peter Costello brought religion to the forefront of federal politics when he attended the annual Hillsong Convention.

Mr Costello has since been joined at Hillsong events by Federal Government heavyweights Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Communications Minister Helen Coonan, and outgoing New South Wales Premier Bob Carr among others.

The Treasurer's interest marked the transition of an event that had begun a little over 20 years ago as a gathering of Pentecostal church members into a major new force in the nation's affairs.

But who is the driving strength behind the movement in Australia?
Meet the Houstons

Brian Houston is doing what he says he was born to do. He and wife Bobbie are the founders and senior pastors of Hillsong - a church that has had success in both the traditional material form and in its ability to impact others.

Pastor Brian Houston says he does not see success in simple terms.

"I think too many people make that mistake of judging success, or even when they hear the word success, immediately take it to [mean] material things.

Lyrics to "Stars"

"Stars" Lyrics
Artist: Switchfoot
Album: Nothing Is Sound
Year: 2005
Title: Stars

Maybe I've been the problem
Maybe I'm the one to blame
But even when I turn it off and blame myself
The outcome feels the same

I've been thinking maybe I've been partly cloudy
Maybe I'm the chance of rain
And maybe I'm overcast
And maybe all my luck's washed down the drain

I've been thinking about everyone, everyone
You look so lonely

But when I look at the stars, when I look at the stars
When I look at the stars, I see someone else
When I look at the stars, the stars
I feel like myself

Stars looking at a planet, watching entropy and pain
And maybe start to wonder
How the chaos in our lives could pass as sane
I've been thinking about the meaning of resistance
Of a hope beyond my own
And suddenly the infinite and penitent begin to look like home
I've been thinking about everyone, everyone you look so empty

But when I look at the stars, when I look at the stars
When I look at the stars, I see someone else
When I look at the stars, the stars
I feel like myself

Everyone, everyone feels so lonely
Everyone yeah everyone feels so empty

When I look at the stars,
When I look at the stars,
When I look at the stars,
I feel like myself
When I look at the stars
The stars
I see someone

switchfoot "horrified' that you can't copy your "Nothing is sound" into your mp3 players.

Hello friends,
my heart is heavy with this whole copy-protection thing. Many PC users
have posted problems that they have had importing the new songs
(regular disc only, not the dual disc) into programs such as Itunes.
Let me first say that as a musician AND as a music fan, I agree with
the frustration that has been expressed. We were horrified when we
first heard about the new copy-protection policy that is being
implemented by most major labels, including Sony (ours), and
immediately looked into all of our options for removing this from our
new album. Unfortunately, this is the new policy for all new major
releases from these record companies. It is heartbreaking to see our
blood, sweat, and tears over the past 2 years blurred by the confusion
and frustration surrounding this new technology. It is also
unfortunate when bands such as ourselves, Foo Fighters, Coldplay,
etc... (just a few of the new releases with copy protection) are the
target of this criticism, when there is no possible way to avoid this
new industry policy.

For mac users these songs should import seamlessly. We are told that
itunes is co...

Plumb : Chaotic Resolve is finally released this week. Listen to it in Against the Flow.Nu107. Sundays. 12lunch. This is another rock album - after the pop themed "candy coated water drops" and the death-themed "Beautiful Lumps of Charcoal".

Plumb, now who is that again? Is that a new band? Remember the song "Stranded" remaked by Jennifer Paige before? That's Plumb's song! How about the song during Jim Carrey's "Tuck Everlast..." I mean "Bruce Almighty" movie: "God-shaped hole". That's plumb again.
Now, don't laugh: Mandy Moore's "I wanna be with you". That's her again.

Her?

Plumb is Tiffany Arbuckle. Her new rock single is "I can't do this." The song is about Evanesence's Ben Moody quitting his band after experiencing success.

Yeah. Its true.

...
...
...

It's a ROCK song! Does any body care what its about? Really? Most listeners will judge it according to its sound (w/c is good-very evanesence like, see? there's a point of mentioning Amy Lee's long lost love). But seriously, the critics will say that the song is a rock version of the Sesame Street "Cooperation". "I can't do this" is the short form, the real message is "I can't do this by myself."

Addressed to God. I'm sure.

Enjoy it when it releases here. Buy the album. Clamor for her to come back to the Philippines - bring everybody to her concert! Remember artists get more compensation from concerts than from record sales!

Completely dangerous & radical letter from Tai of Third Day ...about Critics, Culture and "Christian Country Clubs"! MUST READ!

A Message from Tai of the Rock Band "Third Day"

Hey Everyone,

We're out here on the road working hard on tour. It's street week. So, we're hitting it hard. We've been doing morning radio, interviews, autograph signings, television, and, oh Yeah! Big Ole Concerts every night.

Last night, Mac, Mark, and I got on the bus and were reading through some of the lyrical criticism of the new project. We fully expected the criticism. So, we weren't surprised. We also feel more passionately than every that we have made the record that we needed to make so I'm not going to apologize for the record in ANY way.

I would like to address one aspect of the criticism in an undefensive manner I love worship music. I love worshipping God through music. In about 10 minutes, I'm going to go worship God through sweat at a Habitat for Humanity build in Dallas. I really believe what we tried to convey at the Dove Awards when we won the award for Praise and Worship album of the year. I believe that worship is so much more than music.

You know, there are times when I love hearing very bold statements and declarations of faith. There are times when we absolutely need to speak the name of Jesus, the only name under heaven by which we can be saved. But has anyone stopped to think that maybe we unknowingly use our Lord's name in vein? I mean we print the name of Jesus on Tee shirts because we know they'll sell. We let it roll off our tongues without a 2nd thought (Well at least when we're around other Christians.) I think sometimes we say his name without any reverence whatsoever.

Over the last few years, when worship music has become so huge, we all sing and say a lot of things that we don't really think about. It's easy to say 'em, but it's cliche'. I mean, unlike some of our critics, I'll look at myself first. I sing along to Show Me Your Glory and the line...."I want to see your face." Do I really mean that? If I did, I should be shaking when I say it... Because God's glory is something to behold. I'd probably just drop dead. Even Moses only got a glimpse of the backside and he glowed for days.

The thing with cliches is they're easy to say, but they don't always require thought. There is a time for bold, obvious statements. But there is also a time to be real. I don't live in a Christian utopia. I live in the USA. You might have missed the memo, but this isn't a Christian nation anymore. The name of Jesus is powerful, and it calls for a response. It's controversial. It's never something to be ashamed over. But, we should speak His name reverently and purposefully.

God has been calling us in the band to step out. We were meeting with our road pastor yesterday, and he reminded us of how this process has been years in the coming. He reminded us of all the prayer and study that has gone into this process. You know what, I think he's calling us all out. With our record, and in our upcoming concerts and interviews, we want to create art that challenges us all to think about what Jesus did for us. Sometimes that requires more than just spewing out an easy statment like, "Jesus died for your sins." and crafting a song, a parable if you will, like Innocent which paints a picture that those outside of our Christian "country clubs" might be able to understand as well. (Who else tended to speak in stories and in the language of His culture?)

We're stepping out. We're going to do whatever we can to get our music and the message of our music out into our culture. I'm tired of complaining about the stuff I see on the news. I want to start shaping the news. I'm tired of complaining about Janet Jackson superbowls. I want our music and message on the superbowl. I'm tired of complaining about a culture that's decaying. I want to be the salt that preserves the culture. I'm not ready to retreat and go to my Christian church, school, home, radio station, tv station, etc.

I want to change the world. So, who's with me? You can point the finger at us. That's what "religious" people do. Or, you can join us. You can step out too. It won't be safe. The world will hate you.

Guess what, even more hurtful, your brothers and sisters in Christ will question EVERYTHING you do. But, you know what... God never said this life was supposed to be safe. Maybe if you're faith isn't attracting any criticism, that should be a wake up call because our Savior promised that it would come.

This is an invitation. join us on the wire. Walk out there with us.
Try and balance being in the world and not of it. you can't do that safely. The big slogan of a Christian radio station in our whole town is "Safe for the whole family." Well you know what, that's all fine and good, but I think God has called us to be ...

DANGEROUS FOR OUR WHOLE CULTURE!

Your fellow gomer,
Tai

A new church service based on U2?

The gospel according to U2

By Emily Wiggin
ewiggin@seacoastonline.com /
http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/07282005/emily/54966.htm

This Sunday evening at St. George's, the green drapes behind the
pulpit will be replaced with red to represent the Holy Spirit. The
lectern in the corner will be carted away, the windows opened and the
volume turned up. Way up. The priest wants you to "wail."

Paige Blair, priest of St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor,
Maine, is a U2 fan. The biblically driven lyrics, socially inclusive
messages (and The Edge's guitar playing), urges people to "get up off
their knees" start doing something for their fellow man.

When some of her Yahoo Group (an e-mail listserve of Gen-X
clergy-friends) realized that many were independently preaching the
gospel according to U2, they compiled the sermons into a book called
"Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog." The royalties are
donated to an AIDS Support Organization in Uganda.

Paige, as she casually introduces herself, thought the congregation at
St. George's was ready for some rock with their religion. No autocrat
(and a savvy seller of ideas), Paige gave the commuters in the flock a
little homework. They were to play their U2 CDs on their way to and
from work, and decide which songs went better with prayer, confession
and communion. People started to get excited, high school kids and
older members as well. The "EU2charist" was born - the music-based
service will be held at 5 p.m. this Sunday, July 31 at the Clark
Street Church.

"Christian rock" has always had sort of a bad name in the music world,
partly because the gospel message is not so much sung, as it is shoved
down the throat. No one thinks of U2 as a "Christian rock" band.
They've resisted being categorized in that way - they didn't want to
preach to the choir (there was no way to avoid that phrase), the
references are gentle, and the musicianship speaks for itself. Paige
says that if you have "ears to hear" the messages are clear.

Am I deaf? I like U2. But I really had no idea the band had this kind
of spiritual following. I guess I haven't had ears to hear. But that's
probably because, embarrassingly, I've never read the Bible. I just
thought the lyrics were well-written. Looking at one of their fan
sites, www.atu2.com, it's clear that many others do get the point.
"Drawing the Fish in the Sand," a page that maps out all the biblical
references in the lyrics, song by song, is the most-visited page on
the site.

This all seems a little "progressive" for an old Episcopal church in
York Harbor. I asked Paige how her contemporary ways went over with
the over-70 set. She laughed. Over the five years at St. George's,
they have all learned to trust each other, she says, but she sometimes
get the feeling they think of her as "that cute girl who does funny
things sometimes."

Being "that cute girl" seems to be fine with her. And she has no
interest in tinkering with what works for her older parishioners,
which is usually a more traditional, contemplative service. Which is
partly why she scheduled the "EU2charist" on a Sunday evening, not a
morning. Plus, people from other congregations can come freely,
without feeling like they are cheating on their own churches. Hmm.
Cute and smart.

I have plans Sunday, so I can't attend. But I really wanted to. A
parishioner with a fancy-schmancy home-entertainment system will be
lending the high-volume speakers for the service of song. He asked
Paige, "Do you want to hear it, or do you want to feel it?"

Did he even have to ask?

New Stryper Album out by Aug 2005

For y'all who are old enough to remember. Wek wek wek. Stryper has a new album out. All new songs. No covers.

Who is stryper? A heavy metal band from the 80s. They were the first to get out into the mainstreet music scene - using explicitly Christian messages in their songs. Trademark: Yellow and Black spandex tights and throwing of Bibles onto the audience. They play very loud blistering rock that make most concerts nowadays sleepy.

Stryper paved the way, getting all the critics bad remarks, getting thunderbolts from "Christian" evangelists, admiration and disgust from both Rock Radio/MTV and Rock Magazines. Jars, Sixpence, Switchfoot and POD would not have it so easy today. And today isn't even easy on them too.

The certification marks the band's second gold album, following this

The announcement comes as the Canton, Ohio-based band continues to
thrill sun-baked North American audiences as a main stage act on this
year's installment of the celebrated Vans Warped Tour. Relient K will
continue the trek through to its final bows, set for August 15th at

Released last November, the Top 15 "Mmhmm" has proven to be Relient
K's most successful outing to date, reaping unanimous critical
commendations and the fastest sales of the band's career. Fuelled by
non-stop road work -- including last spring's arena/amphitheater tour
alongside Good Charlotte and Simple Plan -- the band's fourth album
recently jumped 38 places to re-enter the top half of the Billboard
200 (spurred by a one-week 27 per cent sales increase).

In other Relient K news, the video for the album's first single, "Be
My Escape," has been added into rotation on MTV this week -- where it
already in the Total Request Live (TRL) countdown. Small screen
viewers may also take in the quartet's scheduled August 22nd
appearance on ABC-TV's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, during which they will
perform "Be My Escape" outdoors. News of the performance follows last
week's appearance on NBC-TV's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Additionally, Relient K are to appear July 22nd on the MTV "Hits"
program, part of Summer on the Strip from Las Vegas; an appearance on
MTV's Hard Rock Live will air later this summer.

Relient K -- Matthew Thiessen: vocals; Matthew Hoopes: guitar; Dave
Douglas; drums; John Schnek; bass; John Warne -- jumped onto the scene
in 1998, quickly drawing praise for their idiosyncratic brand of
melodic, optimistic, pop-injected punk. The quartet developed a
reputation as one of the hardest working bands on the circuit, playing
an average of 200 gigs a year. The constant touring paid off: Relient
K's three Gotee-released albums -- including 2001's "The Anatomy of
the Tongue in Cheek" -- each achieved stand out sales figures while
expanding the band's loyal fanbase across the country.

By 2003, Relient K had become one of modern punk's biggest underground
acts. Their third album, the gold-certified "Two Lefts Don't Make a
Right ... But Three Do" was a Top 40 smash on the Billboard 200. The
album garnered Relient K their first Grammy Award nomination.
